United Kingdom

CV format in United Kingdom (2026)

The UK CV is defined by what it leaves out. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no nationality — the Equality Act 2010 makes age, sex, race, and other characteristics protected grounds, and employers actively prefer CVs that don't expose them to discrimination claims. What remains is a two-page, achievement-focused document that opens with a short personal statement and gets judged on evidence, not formality.

Why no photo — and what to omit

British recruiters don't just tolerate photo-free CVs; they expect them. A photo on a UK CV marks the application as foreign and puts the employer in an awkward position, since anything revealing protected characteristics (age, race, religion, disability) creates risk under the Equality Act 2010. Many larger employers screen with anonymised processes precisely to strip these signals.

Omit likewise: date of birth (age discrimination has been unlawful since 2006), marital status, number of children, and National Insurance number. Nationality is unnecessary — but stating your right to work in the UK ('Right to work in the UK' or visa status) is genuinely useful post-Brexit, because employers face fines for illegal hiring and check early. Two dated conventions to drop: 'References available on request' (assumed) and listing referees' details on the CV itself.

Structure: personal statement, then evidence

The UK CV opens with a personal statement (also called a profile): three to four lines stating who you are professionally, your strongest evidence, and what you're targeting. It's the most-read paragraph on the page and the place recruiters decide whether to continue. Generic openers ('hard-working team player with excellent communication skills') are the classic failure; specific ones ('commercial analyst with six years in retail pricing, last role covering £40M of revenue') work.

Then reverse-chronological employment with achievement bullets — quantified wherever possible, in British English spelling (optimise, programme, organised). Education follows experience for anyone beyond their first job; GCSE-level detail disappears after your first professional role. Two pages of A4 is the accepted norm — UK recruiters are less strict than Americans about one page, but three pages reads as unedited except in academia or medicine, where the full academic CV is a different genre entirely.

Market habits worth knowing

The UK market runs heavily through recruitment agencies and job boards (Reed, Totaljobs, CV-Library, LinkedIn), which means ATS parsing matters: single-column layout, standard headings, real text. Cover letters are shorter and less formal than continental European ones — often reduced to an email paragraph — but tailoring the CV itself to each posting is expected.

British understatement is real but misunderstood: you're expected to present strong evidence plainly, not to be modest about the evidence itself. 'Delivered a £2.3M cost-saving programme' is fine; superlatives ('outstanding', 'exceptional') are what read badly. Let the numbers carry the confidence.

Applying from abroad

Since Brexit, right-to-work status is the first-pass filter for non-UK candidates: state it explicitly (settled status, Skilled Worker visa sponsorship needed, Graduate visa) rather than making the recruiter guess. If you need sponsorship, target employers on the public register of licensed sponsors — applying elsewhere wastes everyone's time. Convert qualifications into UK-recognisable terms where possible, and reformat your CV to UK conventions before applying; a Lebenslauf-style document with a photo and birth date is instantly marked as unadapted.

Build a United Kingdom-ready CV

AdaptMyCV works natively with UK-style CVs — English-language output, no photo, achievement-led structure — and its ATS checker shows how a UK recruiter's parsing software reads your document. If your master CV follows German, Polish, or Spanish conventions, adapting it to a UK posting strips the local formalities automatically. EU-hosted, GDPR-compliant processing.
